Cullercoats 1917 #1
Cullercoats 1917 #1

A wonderful and rare set of one of five prints for promoting the Cullercoats on the North East coast just north of Tynemouth,
has an amazing slice of social and world wide historical detail stamped and written on the verso, clearing it for publication in 1917.
A moment in history told not only by the images themselves, but by the government stamps on the verso.
This was when the 1st World War was heading towards it's final years, but the British Government decided it was time to open up the coats to tourism again as beach defences were removed as the threat of air raids faded.
It was done to help the mental health of the workers in the nearby industrial yards, the families and to bring money back to a poor area that had always relied on the arts and tourism to bring money in given the smallness of the local fleet.
Two years later, the world wide Spanish flu, partly spread by returning service people and an immune weakened population would infect 500 million people which resulted in anywhere between 17-50 million people dying.

Each print is approximately 6 x 4 1/4 inches and comes mounted to fit a standard 16 x 12 inch opening frame.
