183 lost children that means we are safer today. The Victoria Hall disaster in 1883 lead to the death of 183 children out of 2000 were crushed to death after a performance by The Fays from Tynemouth aquarium as they rushed to get their free prizes. Only one of the doors at the bottom of the stairs were open to control the giving of the prizes. Combined with the narrow stairwell, it meant it was almost impossible to pull out the children.
After two enquiries, the law was passed requiring proper outward opening doors to be in premises. This led to the fire doors we see today.
